{"id":774,"date":"2025-09-16T08:09:41","date_gmt":"2025-09-16T13:09:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/?p=774"},"modified":"2025-09-24T14:37:09","modified_gmt":"2025-09-24T19:37:09","slug":"create-a-beautiful-pota-activations-map","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/?p=774","title":{"rendered":"Create a Beautiful Parks On The Air (POTA) Activations Map"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>Of all the great mapping tools available on the <a href=\"http:\/\/pota.app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Parks On The Air website (pota.app)<\/a>, this one is sorely missing. We&#8217;ll show you how to create a map of your activated POTA parks, which is great for showing off your activations to your other radio buddies. It also helps you keep track of which parks you&#8217;ve been to, so you can continue to expand your number of activated parks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The following relies on free mapping technology:<br><br><a href=\"http:\/\/batchgeo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">BatchGeo<\/a>, which has a free way to import Excel or CSV information and place the coordinates on a map. This needs to stay free in order for this guide to work. Other guides also reference Easy Map Maker, which has since taken away the ability to use more than 250 mapped points for free. I suppose that&#8217;s ok if you live in a small state or province. Alternatively, you can just pay them and then quit worrying if this is going to work tomorrow.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/maps.google.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">Google Maps<\/a> can be used as an alternative mapping solution.  It&#8217;s free, but obviously any use of a Google product comes with giving your data away to the big &#8220;G&#8221;.  If you&#8217;re fine with that, it&#8217;s actually a better mapping strategy with more options.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/msuarc.egr.msu.edu\/external\/potavis\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"MSU Amateur Radio Club's POTAVis\">MSU Amateur Radio Club&#8217;s POTAVis<\/a> is a new solution that doesn&#8217;t require any data scrubbing. It&#8217;s a fast, simple, and beautiful rendition of a POTA activation map with absolutely no lag. Everything is rendered with JavaScript client-side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-4f47b12\" id=\"grab-your-data\" data-block-id=\"4f47b12\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Grab Your Data<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-651e618\" data-block-id=\"651e618\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Navigate to the <a href=\"http:\/\/pota.app\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">pota.app website<\/a>, and log in. In my case, I&#8217;ll search for my home state:<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"562\" height=\"572\" src=\"https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-776\" style=\"width:auto;height:350px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-1.png 562w, https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-1-295x300.png 295w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 562px) 100vw, 562px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you click on your region, in the upper right-hand corner, select &#8220;Download&#8221;, then CSV.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"658\" height=\"329\" src=\"https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-777\" style=\"width:auto;height:200px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-2.png 658w, https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-2-300x150.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 658px) 100vw, 658px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>If you&#8217;re using MSU ARC&#8217;s POTAVis, stop here and dump this CSV file into the app.  If using Google Maps, skip to the <strong>Map Your Data: Alternative<\/strong> section.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-11dad21\" id=\"clean-your-data\" data-block-id=\"11dad21\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">Clean Your Data<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-43b5596\" data-block-id=\"43b5596\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">In this instance, we need to clean up our data a little bit.  Free mapping apps like <a href=\"http:\/\/batchgeo.com\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">BatchGeo<\/a> don&#8217;t give you options for how many different colors your activations can be or how they&#8217;re grouped.  It may randomly decide that anything between 0 and 3 activations are all a single color pin on the map, which would defeat the purpose of using the map to see what you&#8217;ve activated.  Open your CSV file in Excel, Sheets, LibreOffice, or any spreadsheet app of your choice.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"791\" height=\"476\" src=\"https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-3.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-778\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-3.png 791w, https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-3-300x181.png 300w, https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-3-768x462.png 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 791px) 100vw, 791px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-113a6b3\" data-block-id=\"113a6b3\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">Column J is your number of activations in a given park.  We need to make sure your map only displays your activated parks as two colors.  A color for 0 and a different color for 1, which means we need to make sure only those two numbers exist in column J.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-f72347f\" data-block-id=\"f72347f\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">The first open column is where we&#8217;ll cleanse the data.  in L2, type the following formula:<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<pre class=\"wp-block-code\"><code>=if(J2&gt;0,1,0)<\/code><\/pre>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-30ee4a4\" data-block-id=\"30ee4a4\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\">This means that if J2 is greater than 0, make L2 = 1.  Otherwise, make L2 = 0.  This will make any number of activations over 0, whether 37 or just 1, all equal to 1.<\/p><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>Grab the lower right-hand side of L2 with the extra dot on it and drag it down to the bottom row of the data in any column.  In my case there are 352 POTA entities in Michigan, so mine ends at 353.  This will populate that formula into all rows in that column.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"69\" height=\"68\" src=\"https:\/\/www.we8chz.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/09\/image-4.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-779\" style=\"width:100px\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, press CTRL-C to copy those cells.  Go all the way back to the top of the sheet, select column J2, right click,then select the icon for only pasting the values into column J. Your data is now cleaned up. So, in doing this for free, there are limitations.  First, only the page on the BatchGeo site will contain this map.  You cannot embed it in your own website.  Second, it&#8217;s temporary. From here there are various ways to share your map and it&#8217;s associated data.  You can also change the color of the pins based on whether you&#8217;ve activated the park.  I haven&#8217;t gotten into it, but you may even be able to use your non-scrubbed data file directly from the POTA site and manually set colors based on how many times you&#8217;ve activated.  Play around and see what you can come up with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=1xIYFtPcHNPe528bfFwDT5Qwf_3fYnc0&amp;ehbc=2E312F&amp;noprof=1\">https:\/\/www.google.com\/maps\/d\/u\/0\/embed?mid=1xIYFtPcHNPe528bfFwDT5Qwf_3fYnc0&amp;ehbc=2E312F&amp;noprof=1<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-heading stk-block-heading stk-block-heading--v2 stk-block stk-7d506c4\" id=\"pota-map-project-shoutout\" data-block-id=\"7d506c4\"><h2 class=\"stk-block-heading__text\">POTA Map Project Shoutout<\/h2><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-stackable-text stk-block-text stk-block stk-56c3d10\" data-block-id=\"56c3d10\"><p class=\"stk-block-text__text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/map.pota.ninja\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\" title=\"\">The POTA Map project<\/a> is also worth mentioning here, as it&#8217;s a version of what we manually complete in this guide, however, at the moment there&#8217;s no way to separate hunted from activated parks and there&#8217;s no customization to speak of.
